I am making my first costume bra--oh it is a coin bra and I wear a large bra cup size so it needs to be sturdy. So far it is going fine--thanks to advice I've found for other posters on tribe. I am a little stumped on what to do with the back and closure.
Has anyone used a lace-up back with a heavy coin bra? It seems like it would be fairly easy to use the tape that has the grommets to make a lace back closure. The bra I am using has three hooks so it has plenty of width for a few grommets. Would this style be sturdy enough for a coin bra? What sort of ribbon/string is best for the lacing? Are you able to close this yourself? (I don't want anything that will require that someone else helps me get dressed--I plan on x-back straps so this is an extra challenge).
Thanks in advance for any ideas or suggestions!

Re: Coin Bra Closure Question--need ideas and advice
Mon, March 17, 2008 - 12:33 PMFrom what I've read, I wouldn't trust the grommet tape to hold up. It's made from thin pleather and the grommets pop if you look at it wrong. I've only worked with it once - and that was enough.
I have a hard enough time tying a halter behind my neck...I can only imagine the contortions I'd go through to lace up the back strap of a bra ;-)
I'd suggest reinforcing the existing strap and *firmly* attach heavy duty flat pant/skirt hooks. -

Mon, March 17, 2008 - 12:42 PMI agree with Etana - go with the heavy-duty pant/skirt style hooks & eyes. And I wouldn't do the tie-back o-ring thing with a coin bra -- it will have the tendency to droop in the front on you from the weight & that would be bad.

Re: Coin Bra Closure Question--need ideas and advice
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 9:52 AMHi Etana, and others...
I feared the eyelet might not be sturdy enough. I have seen them in sturdier fabrics than pleather--I believe they also sell them in webbed cotton. Upon researching on the internet it looks like the most I would get is 2 sets of eyelet within the width of the strap. Oh well.
(Quote from Etana's post): I'd suggest reinforcing the existing strap and *firmly* attach heavy duty flat pant/skirt hooks. (end quote)
Do you have any recommendations on good heavy duty pant hooks? -

Re: Coin Bra Closure Question--need ideas and advice
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 10:03 AMSam,
Look for the larger flat hooks in the notions department of your local fabric store. I think there's only 1-2 brands - Dritz comes to mind - so I don't have a recommendation. If you can't find the larger ones, you can use the smaller ones...just put them closer together.
I'd use a button or craft thread since it's the stitching that will bear more of the "stress" than the hook itself.
Happy sewing!!

Re: Coin Bra Closure Question--need ideas and advice
Mon, March 17, 2008 - 12:39 PMYou could always try the O-ring and ribbon closure. You just do two layers of grosgrain ribbon to reinforce the straps then lace them through the O-rings and tie tightly! -

Tue, March 18, 2008 - 9:57 AMHi Faedra,
This will sound silly. I saw O-rings at my local Joannes that didn't look very sturdy (I think they were called Glamor rings?) . Are there are particular kind that are better than others? -

Re: Coin Bra Closure Question--need ideas and advice
Mon, March 17, 2008 - 3:50 PMI agree that the grommet tape is probably not sturdy enough. However, I have a friend who made a lace up back on a bra that works great. She put grommets on both sides of the back, then criss crossed the neck straps before lacing them through the grommets. She make the laces long enough so she can loosen them to get it on and off without having to unlace to completely. Looks and works amazing. -

Re: Coin Bra Closure Question--need ideas and advice
Mon, March 17, 2008 - 9:53 PMFor a back-closure, I took the base material that I used to cover the cups and made 'sleeve's' with hook 'n eye closure. On the 'cup end', each sleeve was as wide as, and secured to the cup. with reinforced stitching. The 2 sleeves were 2 inches longer than the 2 back straps and gradually narrowed from the cup to the closure. To put the bra on, the sleeves were pushed towards the cup to expose the strap/closure for easy fastening. Once fthe bra was fastened, the sleeves were drawn towards each other and fastened with hook 'n eyes. The extra sleeve length was distributed evenly across the back strap for a slightly gathered or ruched' look. The great thing about the sleeves is how easy it is to get in and out of and that the elastic backstrap can give/stretch with your movement. I did not feel as 'bound' . I felt secure but comfortable.
The bra was sturdy and secure enough to be covered with the real coins my dear grandfather drilled for me.

Re: Coin Bra Closure Question--need ideas and advice
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 10:03 AMDeede,
That sounds really interesting. Right now I have the back covered with velvet--I only used a few whip stitches so it would be easy to remove. Right now I love the stretchiness and the band is supportive but I am a little unsure what to do about removing or hiding the hooks.) This sounds nice. Do you have any pictures of what this looks like? -

Re: Coin Bra Closure Question--need ideas and advice
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 6:27 PMI am sorry, I don't. That was 30 years ago! But I will send you a more detailed description of how my mother (Edith Head, Jr.) ;~} and I put it together. I was a pretty hefty 180 pounds with a large chest so I needed the wide band backstrap with 3-4 hooks.
