I have lately begun choreographing for two and three people and hope to eventually work with a whole group. Of course I sometimes sift through Youtube for new ideas. I'd love it if you'd share with me some of your favorite troupes -- just a name is fine, but if you have a favorite clip and can provide a link I'd appreciate it even more. :)
I'm leaning toward more cab-ish troupes than ATS here (clearly, since I'm choreographing!). ;-) I like ATS but I haven't studied it, so I couldn't really direct it. Basically I'm looking for the between-the-lines details -- how does a group look cohesive? What does the interaction between the dancers look like? What's a good balance between fast and slow, between everyone doing the same thing and dancers doing complimentary moves, etc.?
Thank you in advance for your suggestions!
Happy dancing,
Eve

Re: Favorite troupes?
Tue, February 12, 2008 - 8:54 PMOne of my favorite local troupes (I live in KC) is Persian Reconnaissance. They're a Tribal Fusion group -- here's a great video from them; it's only a rehearsal, but sublime nonetheless:

Re: Favorite troupes?
Wed, February 13, 2008 - 8:17 AMWell, my favorite troupe is Unmata... They are a hard rockin' group of talented dancers (queing, choreography, fire dancing, etc!) They are definitely different than almost everyone else. They don't do big costumes and they focus on their dancing almost exclusively. Amy Sigil is an amazing choreography, pulling from her Tahitian & Hip Hop talents, to make a tribal fusion style like no other. It may not be for everyone, but if you look at the choreography, they're doing very unsual things in unusual orders. The whole dance is pulled together nicely and becomes a fluid and energizing event! I highly recommend watching them live, Amy's an amazing performer (dazzles on stage!)

But my favorite choreographed piece so far, is this one (the video & music got screwed up a bit though, I think)

Wed, February 13, 2008 - 9:46 AMI <3 Unmata! But their style is so signature, I think if I tried to adopt any of their elements it would instantly be obvious to at least 80% of the bellydance community. ;-) -

Re: Favorite troupes?
Wed, February 13, 2008 - 11:31 AMVery true... but I think it's their energy I most admire when they dance. That's something most Everyone could use a healthy dose of when dancing! Keep it original but remember the Divine Enubriation in life!! ^_^ -
