Belt start???

topic posted Sat, February 16, 2008 - 9:33 PM by  Zina
Hello all,

A picture entitled "Is this a start?" shows a regular belt, covered in glitter, spool of chain, hairy-texturey yarn, and old costume jewelry. Would this glitter belt, as a base, be *too* much even for tribaret? As you can see, the belt already has grommeted holes all around.

Pleeze, does anyone have a vision for me? I have NO imagination!

Thanks,

Zina

P.S. This week I should be getting a fushia fringe (smooth) belt in the mail. Could this be made into something to wear over that one?

I think the "Is this a start?" will work out fine. As far as inspiration goes, I'd ask myself a few questions...
How am I going to wear this? If going over a fringe belt, then I'd have to check that the hangy-down-bits didn't tangle with the fringe.
Is this to be worn with several different costumes? The colors would have to be versatile.
What was the picture in your head as you accumulated this bits-n-pieces? Sketch out your vision.
Does all the bits-n-pieces have to go on this particular belt? Will the details be noticeable or get lost in other stuff?
I like fun fur yarn, but I'm thinking it might be a bit lightweight for fringe. Of course, I haven't used it as fringe - only in hair falls, so I could be wrong.

    My initial idea would be
    a. fringe the belt with the fun fur yarn
    b. as a 2nd layer, loop the chain from the belt, creating medium long loops that go over the fringe
    c. attach the costume jewelry to the places where the chain is attached to the belt - create long beads of fringe ((from the long necklaces I think I saw))

If this sounds rambling, I apologize......the cold medicine may be kicking in :D :D :D

    Good luck -

Etana, great ideas! Since you said the fun fur yarn might be light, I could make it heavier and probably sturdier by either braiding or crocheting it into a simple chain. The question is, which method is better? Braiding would probably take a lot more yarn (I have 5 skeins), but crocheting it into a chain might accidentally come undone. Which method is more successful?

My Lord! What a pain in the butt...more specifically, finger. I opted for the crocheting the yard into a chain. It's a rather hairy little job. LOL

Kudos to crocheting the fun fur - I tried a while back and quickly changed my mind :D :D :D

I think I went for a 4 strand braid...there's a website floating around in my favorites that gives good instructions for braiding <up to 6 or 7 strands, I think). I don't remember what I wanted it for now - one of those ideas that fizzled.

Does anyone remember another thread about stuff that doesn't quite work out?????

So far, 4 skeins have been crocheted (bought 5 @ $1.00) and the fringe was only to be 18" long. I cut the buckle end of the belt ($5.00) off to 36" and took the trim from the waste part to cover the new nekid part. Smoking out in the garage, I spied a whole bag full of washers (free) and remembered seeing some pictures where a dancer covered a belt and bra with washers and the light bulb went off. I then was at Walmart and thought to look at the swivel barrel snaps in the fishing department, bought $5.00 worth. Sewed the snaps 7/8" apart with dental floss which didn't work so next time at Walmart bought beading thread ($.99 ?). Sewed the 43 snaps, installed washers, and tried on belt...too big so cut and additional 3" and had to redo the end. I got to tell you, I was liking it with just the washers. There's was a great clearance sale at Dillards so afterwards went to Hobby Lobby to buy ribbon and cord (about $4.00) to use as the ties. Installed ties to satisfaction.

Now on to cut the fringe. I wanted it 18" long and cut 36" pieces to fold in half and loop through the washers. When I got to the second batch, was NOT paying attention and started cutting 18" pieces. Great. I figured to make it look on purpose and arranged 2 short, 2 long in an alternating pattern, but didn't have enough. Crochet more yarn. Installed and lacked one short fring and one long fringe after I tried to improvise by using some of the snaps to hand looped chain. This was more than done enough to try on.

It makes my butt look fat!

Well most of the stuff we layer on makes our butts and hips look big, thats the point isnt it? I would love to see a picture of what you have now.
