I have to ask, Are the yarn with fake hair Hair Falls on their way out? My dance troupe has been selling them for a fundraiser and have sold quite a few but a well know tribal dancer in town said they are passe. What are thoughts in other parts of the country (I'm in the mid west). Should we try to make more to sell or stop why we are ahead?

Re: Hair falls
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 8:19 PMOdd....I'm in KC & I've never heard that. I agree with Kalyani - I don't much care for my own personal use - I like them & will continue to wear them. I can see how wondering that would influence your business or not, though. Although I have to say that we sell them too (you'll see some of ours at Salome & Naxi's workshop next weekend, actually, if you're going), and we haven't slowed down on selling them at *all*. -

Thu, May 1, 2008 - 3:20 PMHey Belltrix
Sorry I can't make it to the workshop on the 10th (can't find a babysitter) I was looking forward to the shopping and the work shop.
Thanks everyone for your input. I think we will stop on selling while we are ahead and work on something else for our funraising efforts. -

Re: Hair falls
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 8:05 AMoh - I forgot to say that I *have* noticed a decline in sales of Cowrie Falls. They're not moving at all....don't know if it's that people aren't wearing them anymore, or if they're just all making their own now.
Sorry we'll miss you on the 10th, though! :( -

Re: Hair falls
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 12:07 PMI've heard this too, but I still sport my enormo-giganta-huge yarn falls to just about every performance (and am complimented on them every time!). I say, if you like 'em, wear 'em!
....On a similar note, I do feel that they can look both amatuerish and professional....it really depends on how you wear them. This is just my 2 cents, though.

Re: Hair falls
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 12:12 PMWow....I MUST be tired. To answer your second question, I would continue to make them (perhaps in styles/colors you are more certain will sell). I usually bring a few to sell, but give out business cards specifying that people can order them custom made. I've found that a lot of people like being able to touch them and try them on, but may want it in different colors. This may be good for your troupe so you don't worry about spending money on materials to make colors that may not sell. Good luck! -

Re: Hair falls
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 3:24 PMi think that's good advice.
DEFINItely like to know the feel and all of something before ordering :)
plus, Bastet is right.
when well made and well worn, nothing can compete with the beauty and *class* of hairfalls...

Re: Hair falls
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 9:25 PMBastet looks totally fab in her big huge fall, in fact I want one! Can they be made in something other than (me allergic) wool?

Re: Hair falls
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 7:48 AMI agree that it DEPENDS on the hair falls themselves and how they are worn. We held a hair and make up workshop here in kc , and one of the things i mentioned that i personally have as a pet peeve, is when women scrape their hair into a pony tail and slap on a fall w/10strands of yarn and call it good. i know this sounds terribly catty-i truly don't mean it that way. the thing is, as a performer, we have certain standards we must uphold. we are putting on a show. creating a fantasy if you will. therefore, i think it's important to create a whole LOOK. not just half-ass it. (for lack of a better term). We are belly dancers and should take pride in our look! Even down to our hair falls/up do's/flowers/head pieces etc. :)

Sun, May 4, 2008 - 1:09 PMI couldn't agree more!!
we're supposed to give everything we have into the dance, and that also means totally looking the part -

Re: Hair falls
Sun, May 4, 2008 - 9:04 PMI agree with Xira and anyone else who gave a similar voice.
I think the decline in sales could be a problem of a flooded market. Not only are there more and more and more vendors all the time, but everyone wanting to buy these things has already bought them. Things such as belts and bras, people will buy more and more because they want another color, they outgrew that style, whatever. But falls people usually buy in their natural color and then never need another pair until that pair falls all to crap, which may take YEARS. Same with cowrie falls. To the artists, the spacings and the added beads or feathers or other such things, the choice of yarn and color all add up to very different pieces. To your average consumer, not so much.
I think if you want to pander those you are going to need some sort of new spin no one else has thought of yet. And not just less expensive, you too use Colinette 5 point yarn, and peacock feathers. But Fabulous, Strange, Avant-garde such and stuff.

Re: Hair falls
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 2:15 PMalso, it's warming up in a lot of places -- maybe people are finding them too warm to wear?
at the NBS last week, i saw all sorts of falls still in use. one dancer who's going to be teaching here soon apparently had a wonderfully huge fall that was absolutely gorgeous
i don't intend to stop wearing them =p
and like someone else said, alot of people are learning to make their own, aaaaand the market is pretty flooded. you could buy a million different falls from a million different dancers on tribe alone if you wanted to.
but i don't think one dancer can say "they're passe" as if she's the queen of the aesthetic. =p hair falls are used in so many different "subcultures," maybe if you diversified them out from just bellydance falls, you could expand your customer base? lots and lots of gothic chicks and hippie chicks like to wear them. :)
