I'm working on a Tribaret piece for Halloween (it takes me a while to choreograph) using Natacha Atlus's version of "I Put A Spell On You" ( www.imeem.com/jukeboxmusi...pell-on-you/ ). I'm having a devil of a time with the footwork but then there is a reason I'm starting now. lol
So I thought maybe we could discuss Halloween performances, what we've done or need to do, maybe post some links to performances or costumes of the past.
What does everyone think?
Personally I'm trying to figure out how to really polish off the outfit I am making. I have a purple sari fabric I am making a cross top out of that will criss-cross down my stomach to a matching tabard with strips of gold netting hanging from it. At least that is the plan. I am thinking of making matching arm warmers from the netting too. Oh and a black skirt though I've only decided the color for that. It's the bling that I'm really lost on though. I'm looking for an elegant, witchy, exotic style. Yeah, lets see if I can pull that off. lol

Sat, June 13, 2009 - 4:28 PMI love the idea of a Halloween performance! I have some leftover fabric that I used to make a Halloween bedspread last year, and I've thought about using it to make a bra and belt. It would definitely be different! I kind of wanted to dance to Ministry's 'Every Day is Halloween.' I've loved that song since I high school. -

Sun, June 14, 2009 - 3:12 PMWhat about rhinestone jewelry? Not just a single strand necklace though, more like a choker with lots of strands hanging down. Something substantial and showy. Some of the traditional costume jewelery for Indian brides would look great, considering you're using saree fabric for your top. Here is one of my faves for sarees and they have a huge collection of jewelry too. www.utsavsarees.com/jewelry/index.htm -

Re: Halloween Performances
Sun, June 14, 2009 - 11:46 PMif you're going for "witchy" closer to halloween you can find spiderweb patterned black lace to use as a veil (I have done this for a previous costume with a patterned net that didn't even need hemmed) and glitzy spider-themed jewelry can be found (try hot topic, or make your own with wire, beads, and rhinestones), you could string beads or glittery thread to make your own web-look belly-drape, or crochet it for a hip-drape or shawl. For an entrance prop, the pointy hat would be classic, and you could use a broom in a way similar to a cane dance...
just stay open-minded about your possibilities, and stick to a theme, whether you want to be cliche "hocus pocus" and "bewitched", or something a bit more dark or sexy, and pick your acessories based on whether they help you achieve the overall effect.
That is a great song, btw! I hope you have a great time with your performance. -

I have a friend that just suggested using ratty cheese cloth (dyed black) for an overskirt. I am going to have so much fun!

Re: Halloween Performances
Tue, June 16, 2009 - 1:20 PMQuite a few years ago myself and two others were invited annually to dance in between the bands at a huge Halloween bash. So we did a normal set in normal costumes (is there such a thing as a normal bellydance costume???) and threw in a Halloween song on each set (usually 2 or 3 sets, depending on the number of bands). Something fun like Witchy Woman, Dark Lady, It's a Dead Mans Party... there's loads of excellent Halloween songs!
It was soooooo much fun!! They are still some of my most favorite gigs (even tho at the last one my husbands a-hole "friend" thought he could make me cry if he ripped on my performance hard enough... needless to say I don't speak to that jerk anymore!) -

Tue, June 16, 2009 - 1:24 PMWhat a jerk! My husband has a few "friends" like that. Needless to say we have very little to do with them. <.<
On a lighter note it sounds like maybe we should start a list of songs. lol We all seem to have a few favs.
