I'm very sorry to have to announce the cancellation of this event.
I've just been informed that one of the presentors (the one who was to instruct the choreography portion of the workshop) has accepted a conflicting engagement.
I will be refunding the workshop fee to those of you that have paid already. Please contact me if you have already purchased your fire fans from Riz, and we will see what can be done there as well.

MidNight Tribe is Growing!

Requirements:

• Dancer should have an intermediate/advanced education in Egyptian/Cabaret style belly dancing. Folkloric dancing is a plus but not necessary. Competent use of zills will be necessary.

• Dancer should have an advanced Tribal/Tribal fusion education. We are not an ATS troupe, but use most movements from the slow/fast ATS vocabulary, as well as many currently popular tribal fusion movements.

• Dancer should be healthy, physically fit, and will be required to be able to make quick level changes, endure extended periods of dancing on the knees, and some floorwork.

• Dancer will be REQUIRED to perform with some sort of fire implement (fans, staff, poi and/or hoop). It is not necessary to already know how to dance with fire, we can and will train you. Dancer will be required to sign a waiver of liability, so you should have medical insurance.

• Dancer should have reliable transportation and optimally live on the Northwest side of Chicago and/or surrounding suburbs. Rehearsals are held in the Palatine area 1 to 2 times per week (Thursday nights and some Sundays), barring any severely inclement weather.

• Dancer is expected to show a high level of professionalism, troupe commitment and a commitment to further their own dance education.

• Dancer is expected to purchase their own troupe-related costume pieces, sew portions of their own costumes and help out regarding costume acquisition and assembly where and when necessary.

• Dancer will be required to sign a troupe charter.

If you said “yes” to all of the requirements and would like to audition, please email us privately at info@midnighttribe.com with a resumé/CV of your dance background, education and performances. Please include a cover letter telling us a little about yourself and what you'd expect from joining our troupe. If after reviewing your information we think you may be a good fit, we will email you with detailed information about the audition process, date, time and location.

Thanks!

I am from the states, but i am copying this for her, please read

Hello all.

Please support you sisters in the UK. We are now banned from purchasing dance swords.

Sad news I'm afraid. I have just spoken to Jonathan Batt, at the home office who has confirmed that we (belly and tribal dancers in the UK) are covered in the VCR (Violent Crimes Reduction Bill).
As Belly dancers, we are not covered in the exemptions of being classed as a 'sporting activity' or a Historical reenactment. While we can perform with our existing swords, if you have public liability insurance. You can no longer purchase a new blade.

This is scary thought, as if we are not included in the exclusions to the ban, the art form of sword dancing will ultimately die out in the UK! my sword was broken recently In a workshop when it was dropped. I now can't get a new one....

The only way we can get this changed for all belly dancers is to contact the home office and request that as a dance form that we are allowed to continue to be allowed to purchase swords, so that we can continue with a beautiful art form.

Please, Please take the time to contact Jonathan and request that he put forward to the Home Office that bellydancers and tribal dancers are made exempt from the VCR Bill. He is a nice guy and has agreed to be the contact point for this query. It will take a huge volume of dancers contacting him to make a difference, so please take the time to write to him.

His contact details are Jonathan.Batt@Homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk

Also if you are a member of a tribe, where this is not mentioned, can you please post information there.

Ta
May 4

12:30-2:30
Workshop I - Dynamic Combinations for Any Kind of Music

Amara will drill a series of short combinations focusing on strength, flexibility, balance, isolation, and layering. Then we will rework the combinations by changing their speed, size, and quality (gooey, sharp, and shimmies) in order to assist in our visual presentation of any kind of music.
These combinations and exercises can be applied to create both choreographies and improvisations.

2:45-4:45
Workshop II - Fusion Techniques
Amara takes a unique approach to this emerging form as she presents techniques and tools on how to create Fusion with ANY dance form. Learn the differences between sequential and simultaneous fusion concepts, explore where to find various dance elements to fuse, and discuss issues of when and why to fuse.
Fusion is a great way to add to your current vocabulary, foster creativity, and push your dancing to new heights.

This workshop is appropriate for all levels and all dance forms.

We are doing a solace song, and Bombay by Timerland...we want something dramatic for the last song, maybe something that has nice sections so each of the troupe can have a moment in the spotlight.. We've been kicking arounds some non-traditional music like bands such as Massive Attack and Nine Inch Nails but so far we haven't found anything that we feel works well. We like a moody, gothic sort of start but it needs a kick to it...we're open to suggestions of what other songs/bands we can try. Anything you can suggest and we'll be thankful in our search for just the right song! We want to find something that hasn't been done to death...our Solace song, Nataraja, is about as traditional as we get....

It is all impmrov. That is my friend video taping/ blabbing, we are choreographing a dance to this song for her, so that is why she is talking like that, lol! Anyways, as far as the video...
It was improv, and I need to slow down and think more, I'm a little scattered. I definately need to clean up my hands, but any other input would be greatly appreciated!

Has anyone used a lace-up back with a heavy coin bra? It seems like it would be fairly easy to use the tape that has the grommets to make a lace back closure. The bra I am using has three hooks so it has plenty of width for a few grommets. Would this style be sturdy enough for a coin bra? What sort of ribbon/string is best for the lacing? Are you able to close this yourself? (I don't want anything that will require that someone else helps me get dressed--I plan on x-back straps so this is an extra challenge).

Thanks in advance for any ideas or suggestions!

*cross post*

I'm planning to write an article on belly dancers who have a (chronic) illness. I have once started a topic on this before on Bhuz and I was surpriced to see how many dancers have a (chronic) illness. Since I am one of those dancers and I know I'm not the only one out there I thought it would be a good idea to share stories.

(btw I won't be using other peoples stories without permission)

I'd like to know:

1.) If you have a (chronic) illness, did you have it already before you started dancing? Or did you get it after you were already dancing?
2.) If you already were ill, was it hard to take up classes?
3.) question for pro dancers: I you were already ill before starting your belly dance career, how did you decide to go pro? How does it affect your career? Or if you got ill after you were already teaching or perforing, how did it change things for you?
4.) question for everybody: how does being ill affect your ability to dance?
5.) Does belly dance do any good for your illness?
6.) If you have anything else to mention please do so :-)

I shall start but without giving away too much, otherwise the article will be boring.
I was already ill when I started taking up classes. I thought it would be good for my health to do some light exercise (but I can't call belly dance light exersize!). It was not my intention to go pro, but due to circumsances it just went that way. It was very hard, because I tried to keep up with teaching classes in different towns. In the end I had to quit because I got a burnout. After that I planned it all more carefully. Performing appeared to be the beter way to go for me; less exhausting and beter payment. Still I always kept some classes going, but workshops was the way to go. However that's also very exhausting.
I think if it wasn't for belly dance I would be much more ill by now, it keeps me from becoming a zombi. But then again, there are times when I cannot dance, like now. I don't know if I want to go back teaching again, I have been asked and it is tempting, but all the hassles around it (marketing etc.) are too much. I'll see, it's something I can always pick up again. As for performing, that's a bit easier to get back to, it's more likely I go that direction again.

Btw, I haven't been on Tribe for ages because of being ill

Basically I'm looking for the between-the-lines details -- how does a group look cohesive? What does the interaction between the dancers look like? Without getting into specifics about my relationship, I am allowed to continue belly dance (spending time & $$$ on lessons and costuming) as long as I show progress in a manner pleasing to my significant other. Some nights ago I was showing him videos of various types of belly dancers. In a nutshell, he likes cabaret type with lots of hip action (this is more how women dance in his native country), he thinks Rachel Brice is amazing but watching her his eye was mainly attracted to specific parts of her body at any one time, with tribal his eye was drawn to the heavy looking costume; with gothic he quickly got bored. He likes for the dance to be about all three. I really appreciated his feedback as it gives me direction as to what to keep studying and for future costuming ideas.

Hi again. I used to have a long black velvet (short nap, smooth) dress that was repurposed into a long skirt (I just basically lopped off the top and made a casing for elastic). The sides are sewed, there's only the kick pleat on the back which comes up almost to my knees. The waist isn't too tight and I can get it to sit higher or lower with it looking fine. My question is...might a straight black velvet skirt be used as part of a costume even if it's not open on the sides if it's flattering? Along with anything sparkley, I do love anything soft to the touch.

Another question about velvet and colors. Are these costume pieces like regular clothes, you just wear them in the winter? Can I wear my white gypsy skirt (also love white) after Labor Day?

K, one final question. I have a short black suede cape like thing with fringe about 12" long all around. I used to wear it over a black wool blazer to make it look like a fringed jacket. I don't wear it anymore. Today it came to me to maybe use it as a fringe skirt and found it more than goes around my body. HOWEVER, the back sticks out (kind of like a bustle) because of the cut to fit around the back. Does something like this piece have potential? I know it'd be more tribal but I'd like to repurpose pieces I don't use to save money for what I really might want to buy (like endless wave harem pants or the ruffily fluffy ones).

Thanks for any advice.

Yesterday at Dollar Tree I found some really cute cuff bracelets (photo in my profile). I know everyone else's costumes are just totally gorgeous and glamorous, but since I'm just starting out I thought these were cute so bought a set to coordinate with the few pieces I currently own. They're each 9 wires, individually beaded, wired together to form the cuff not quite 1" wide. The're finished with wire beaded tassels with matching dangly thingies. The bracelets also come in blue, gold, and bronze. Someone else may like them as a very reasonable priced piece of jewelry. Isn't this what tribaret is about...sparkly stuff?

I wear an eternity collar which is locked on. You can see it in my profile's pictures (page 3, titled his_zina). Ordinarily I don't wear any other necklace anymore but am wondering what I "might" wear that wouldn't detract from it costume-wise. I'm especially wanting to think of something that may coordinate with the coin belt I just made with American dimes and Mexican steel-toned coins. Even though these items seem to lend themselves to tribal, my school and our costumes are more cabaret and gypsy.

Thanks much,

They're performing two acts as part of the Dances of Vice Festival in New York in February 2008 featuring Rasputina as the headlining act in the exciting context of a Neo-Victorian costumed ball. I highly recommend checking out their website and videos- their performances are elegant, theatrical, and incredibly skillful.

I can't even really say "I'm tribaret or tribal fusion (though I think I may be leaning that way)".

I know, I know...plenty of time to figure this out. My question is, though: when and why did you decide what flavor belly dance you preferred? Or is this an ever-evolving thing?

We recently released a debut album. It's a mix of electronic and arabian styles. We're hoping it might appeal to the tribal and belly dance community, and also people that are into this sort of vibe and music. Please feel free to have a listen on myspace where we have four full tracks available to listen online.

It would also be great to promote it through the network of tribal and/or belly dance teachers who might be interested to sell it at a class or bazaar. We can offer it at wholesale prices with plenty of capacity for the seller to make a decent profit on top of the wholesale price.

Please contact info@nomadiqa.com for further details. Sorry for the self promotion.

I'm taking a cabaret class, but personally I have more of a tribal flair. Even when dancing cabaret my movements are more earthy. I danced my first show in a borrowed, glitzy-ish costume and I was uncomfortable, out of my element I suppose. Luckily my instructor is flexible with the costumes we are allowed to wear. I'm planning on wearing charcoal mehndi Melodia pants and making the rest of my costume. Anyone have some advice on quick, inexpensive tribaret beginner's costuming?
